Abstraksi:The field of evolutionary robotics has demonstrated ability to automatically design the morphology and controller simple physical robots through synthetic evolutionary processes. wever, it is not clear if variation-based search processes can at-the complexity of design necessary for practical engineering robots. Here, we demonstrate an automatic design system that uces complex robots by exploiting the principles of regularity, ularity, hierarchy, and reuse. These techniques are already eslished principles of scaling in engineering design and have been rved in nature, but have not been broadly used in artificial ution. We gain these advantages through the use of a genre representation, which combines a programmatic representawith an algorithmic process that compiles the representation a detailed construction plan. This approach is shown to have benefits: it can reuse components in regular and hierarchical s, providing a systematic way to create more complex modules simpler ones; and the evolved representations can capture in-c properties of the design space, so that variations in the repntations move through the design space more effectively than valent-sized changes in a nongenerative representation. Using system, we demonstrate for the first time the evolution and ction of modular, three-dimensional, physically locomoting ts, comprising many more components than previous work on brain evolution.
