Abstraksi:Abstract Based on a teleological understatiding of human behavior, classical Adierian theory espouses revenge as a salient motive in suicidal thoughts and behavior. In this article, the author proposes "A More Useful Form of Revenge" as a therapeutic strategy in dealing with clients who verbalize suicide. The strategy requires a paradoxical way of thinking as a basis for therapeutic intervention. As a well-established universal principle in Adierian therapy, paradoxical thinking in the present context incorporates aligtning a client's malevolent motivations with more socially useful goals. Knowing the unconscious purpose of a client's suicidal thoughts or verbalizations guides clinical decisions. Inclusion of an illustrative case example provides the basis for an explication of some strengths and limitations of the proposed therapeutic strategy.
