Abstraksi | : | Abstract Treatment noncompliance remains the primary impediment to effective medical and psychological treatment. This article proposes a link between lifestyle convictions, illness perceptions, I.e., situational beliefs about medical and psychological conditions, and compliance or noncompliance with prescribed treatment. Lifestyle convictions are shown to drive individuals' illness perceptions and influence their decisions about treatment, including compliance. Accordingly, focused psychotherapy can effectively resolve treatment noncompliance by addressing the underlying lifestyle convictions and the illness perceptions that support noncompliance.
