Abstraksi | : | Abstract Alfred Adier's theory of crime suggests that criminals tend to have lower social interest, that they were hyperactive as children, that they experienced parental pampering, and that they take pains in planning crimes. Convicted murderers (n = 94) and nonviolent offenders (n = 76) were compared to find if they differed on measures of these constructs. Participants connpleted the BASIS-A Inventory (Wheeler, Kern, & Curlette, 1993), M/ender-Wa/i Rai/ngSca/e(Ward, Wender, & Reimherr, 1993), Parentai Behavior Questionnaire (Williamson, 1992), and a demographic questionnaire. Tests of mean differences using MANOVA indicate that murderers report less social interest and more childhood symptoms of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder than nonviolent offenders. Tests on means reveal that this sample of murderers had lower social interest compared to the BASiS-A Inventory's normative sample reaching statistical significance with p < .01. Participant reports of parental pampering did not vary by level of violence. Overall, the study provides partial support for Adier's theory of crime, and it does not lead to conclusions that negate Adier's propositions |
