| Abstraksi | : | Deferring the grazing of annual pastures at the start of the growing season has been shown to allow a better germination and early growth of pasture leading to increased subsequent pasture production. !t also reduces the deterioration of soil structure in some circumstances. However, it will incur additional costs due to supplementary feeding of grain or hay and probably requires a lower stocking rate. To address this economic trade-off and to select the optional combination of the pasture deferment and stocking rate, a stochastic dynamic program¬ming model was used in this study. A biophysical simulation model of Pasture Growth and Animal Production (PGAP) was used to estimate the required transition probabilities. These were generated for each of the various possible states of the annual pasture resource and each possible combination of grazing management decisions. The combi¬nations of the stocking rate and length of pasture deferment maximiz¬ing the net present value of expected returns was found to vary widely depending upon the variations in the state of the pasture system over time, the price of animal products and the costs of production. |
