Abstraksi:Learning a language with-out learning a grammar is like building a house without any foundation. In many cases of the teaching of a language, grammar is usually taught at the very beginning of the whole teaching and learning process. The reason of placing grammar in the early stage is based on the fact that grammar can help the learners in understanding and producing the new language. The four abilities that should be mastered by the learners such as listening, reading, speaking and writing depend closely on grammar. However, learning a grammar is not an easy task to do. Many students feel that gram-mar is a burden for them to master the language quickly. Grammar, which introduces them with various rules for making proper sentences, often makes the students feel afraid of making sentences rather than having a motivation of learning how to produce the language well. This situation, of course, makes the teacher thinks of the best way of teaching the target language. Many methods and approaches that have already been invented during the years show us the concern of the teachers to limit the students' difficulties in learning a language. Until today, there are still pro and con about the best way of teaching English. Grammar in particular seems to be the focus of almost all the teaching methods and approaches. Since grammar is regarded as the foundation of the four abilities, an effective method or approach should then be applied so that the learners are not having trouble again in learning grammar. Among various methods and approaches that have been applied so far, communicative approach seems to be the most popular. In Indonesia, for example, communicative approach has been chosen as the approach of teaching English in the national curriculum. The belief that teaching grammar traditionally will create an ineffective and an inactive situations makes the communicative approach popular and widely used by the English teachers.
