Abstraksi:Audiolingualism reached its period of most widespread use in the 1960s. Then, came criticism on its theoretical foundation both in terms of language learning and teaching. Practitioners also complained of the students' lack of oral competence after years of study. New methods came into existence, and one of them was CLT. There are various concepts of CLT that have caused controversial arguments. The proponent of CLT says that CLT is an approach that aims to make communicative competence the goal of language teaching with the emphasis of oral skill. The 1984 English Syllabus for the Secondary School (in Indonesia) adopts this approach with an emphasis on the development of reading skill. Because it has been misinterpreted then, the 1994 English Syllabus has redefined the approach. It has got a new label: MEANINGFUL APPROACH or Pendekatan Kebermaknaan.
