| Abstraksi | : | A vessel belonged to one of Oil Company in Indonesia has broken at the weld joint between shell and nozzle . It is necessary to conduct failure analysis to find out the root cause of the vessel failure by using method insitu-metallography and material hardness test. The vessel has been operated since 1980, there is no ND/ data during the commissioning test when the pressure vessel was initially put into operation so that it cannot be concluded whether or not welding defects take place which might act as an initial fatigue crack. The possibility of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is unlikely occurred, because ethylene glycol does not attack such as a Austenitic stainless steel up to 171°C (340 °F). More over, the rest of the nozzles are not subjected such a leakage The microstructure of the shell of the vessel having the microstructure consists of austenitic with obvious transgrannular crack at boundaries . A transgrannular cracks occurred on the vessel is suspected due to fatigue loading which is triggered by the vibration of the inlet tube. During the vessel operation the existing dynamic load caused the cracks to propagate till failure. |
