| Abstraksi | : | This study looks at how Minangkabau language (ML) and Indonesian language (IL) influence each other as they are spoken interchangeably by ML speaker in Bandung. These speakers are bilinguals who master both languages and use them in their daily communication. The use of this language inevitably results in mutual influence that leads to interference. According to the theory of Weinreich there are three types of interference: 1. substitution, 2. over differentiation, and 3. interpretation. Based on the internal factors, phonological interference in IL by Minangkabau speakers in Bandung falls into one of these categories. This study shows that over differentiation is the most dominant type of interference found among the respondents. Interference occurs due to some influential external factors, which are categorized by social, age, and language use factors. The social factor is, then, ranked into high, medium and low levels of social class. The result of this study shows that phonological interference in IL occurs mostly among Minangkabau speakers from medium to low social classes. |
