| Abstraksi | : | Ammonia removal occured by biojiltration technique where nitrifying bacteria naturally immobilized on packing material to oxidize ammonium to nitrate. The objective of this study was to compare packing material of coral and granular activated carbon (GAC) on biofilters as supporting material to nitrifying bacterial growth at laboratory scale. The night soil sludge was enriched by addition of ammonium sulphate to foster the nitrifying bacteria and the enriched nitrifying bacteria was inoculated to biofilters. Ammonia gas was introduced to biofilters by gradually increasing from 3-62 ppm and ammonia load from 0.02-1.97 g-Nlkg-dry-material/day for 24 days. The average of ammonia removal efficiency were 81% for coral biofilter and 85% for CAC biofilter. During operation, both of biofilters were increased in pH and population of autotrophic nitrifying bacteria, however decrease in water content and population of heterotrophic bacteria. The maximum of ammonia removal capacity were 0.53g-Nlkg-dry- coral/day and 0.66 g-Nlkg-dry CAC/day. Performance of CAC biofilter was better than coral biofilter. |
