Abstraksi:To trace the history of the development of nuclear power, one can look back to more than four decades of efforts in a changing world. Much has been achieved, many lessons have been learnt and still much more has to be done. During the 1960s nuclear power achieved the status of a technically proven and commercially viable energy source and by 1970 already 90 units were operating in 14 countries with a total installed capacity of 16, 1 GW Currently total installed capacity amounts to more thaYl 348 GWoperating in 38 countries. When at first nuclear energy was welcomed as a new and clean energy source, in later years public awareness and concern for the environment related to radiation problems considerably slowed down construction of new nuclear power plants. Building of new plants is currently done only in Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. This paper attempts to look at past development of nuclear power, its setbacks and its prospects. A brief discussion on the possibilities of the need for nuclear energy in Indonesia is also provided.
