| Abstraksi | : | The present study investigated the implementation of literature circles as an out-of-class activity to reveal its impact on the participants learner autonomy. This study aimed at seeking the impact of literature circles on promoting learner autonomy and how the participants display their learner autonomy during the program, especially in level of control over learning management. Using qualitative approach, it employed three instruments, i.e. observation sheet, interview items and participants reflection journal. Six students from English Language Teaching Department of Sampoerna School of Education, a teacher- training institution in Indonesia, became the research participants. They are classified into three groups: Low-frequent, Mid-frequent, and High-frequent Users of Learning Strategies. The result revealed that the implementation of literature circles in this study provided opportunities for the tutor and the participants to develop the participants learner autonomy, as the participants had to manage their time to read and attend the discussion while they had to do other responsibilities. Besides, the roles assigned during the discussion enabled them to take control over their learning with little assistance from the tutor. Moreover, the participants displayed learner autonomy through their employment of learning strategies. The strategies employed are categorized into metacognitive, affective and social strategies, which were applied with various degrees of frequency and various ways. |
