Abstraksi:Sago starch-based polymeric flocculants could be synthesized by grafting copolymerization of polyacrylamide (PAM) branches on modified polysaccharide (carboxymethyl starch, CMS) backbone by using microwave irradiations {microwave initiated synthesis}. The objectives of this study were to identify the best process conditions for synthesizing of flocculants made of sago starch base and to identify the flocculants performance on reducing suspended solids contained in water. According to the test result of several properties of carboxymethyl starch-grafted-polyacrylamide (CMS-g-PAM) flocculant such as the products coversion rate, grafting ratio, grafting efficiency and flocculation performance (removal efficiency of tested parameters: total suspended solid (TSS), turbidity, and color) then it could concluded that the best conditions of copolymerization reaction was using 100 ml of aerylamide 50% and 3 minutes of microwave irradiations. Flocculants CMS-g- PAM produced by the best process conditions could reduce TSS 7.5 to 2.5 mg/l (66.67%), turbidity 8.5 to 2 FTU (76.47%), and colour 40.5 to II PtCo unit (72.84%).
