Abstraksi:Man made accidents may involve a complex causal process. Removing or mitigating the risk factors of the disasters requires a comprehensive understanding of why disasters occur and how their causal process works. Investigating these two, but vital questions, this paper aims to discuss underlying mechanisms of the man made accidents. The Constraint-Response Theory developed by author provides a fundamental concept of understanding causation of the man made accidents in construction. This theory is not only concerned with occurrences of system failures and context failures, but also mechanisms underlying them. It is expected that theory will improve understanding of the man made accident causation process, assist in investigation of the accidents, and offer guidance on effective accident prevention measures. In this paper, firstly, fundamental concepts of the theory are addressed. Secondly, a model representing the theory is presented. Thirdly, findings of tests recently undertaken for the theory dependability are reported. Finally, discussions about the applicability of the theory are summarized.
