AN ANALYSIS OF NARRATIVE STRUCTURE IN OLIVER TWIST BY CHARLES DICKENS
ABSTRAKSI :
Narrative structure is a stage that a character should go through in a story; there are equilibrium, disruption, recognition, repair of the damage, and re-equilibrium. This research aims to find out the narrative structures from Tzvetan Todorov’s theory in the novel Oliver Twist. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The problem of this study is to determine what are the narrative structures in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist according to Tzvetan Todorov’s theory. The result of this research found 16 data points analysed using the theory of narrative structure by Tzvetan Todorov and the research findings reveal a narrative structure in Oliver Twist that is aligned with Todorov's theory. Oliver's story, from birth in a workhouse to adoption by Mr. Brownlow, demonstrates this structure. The characters experience transformation and atonement, which help to restore the narratives re-equilibrium.
