AN ANALYSIS OF THE PORTIA’S CHARACTER IN WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

ABSTRAKSI :
The Merchant of Venice tells us about friendship, revenge, and nature of racial and religious interactions. The title itself is misleading and is often misconstrued as a reference to Shylock, the Jew. However in realty it describes the merchant Antonio. Shakespeare uses a racial and religious background to build his character. He also uses the events, which his characters faced to make his characters growth and makes the story the drama more interesting. The drama shows us how friendship can make someone do anything to his friend, and also how hatred can force someone to run his enemy. The Portia’s character in Williams Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice is an interesting subject to discuss. The writer wants to know further about how Shakespeare describes one of the great character, Portia’s, in drama The Merchant of Venice. For this research, the writer uses the library research method and finds the source of data from Internet. The result of this research is to find out what are Portia’s characters is in the Merchant of Venice. In conclusion, according to the writer’s analysis, Williams Shakespeare describes the Portia’s character in several characterizations, and almost all the character is good character.
