MORAL DEVELOPMENT OF MARY LENNOX AS REFLECTED IN FRANCES H. BURNETT'S THE SECRET GARDEN: PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY
ABSTRAKSI :
The character is the soul of the story. Without character in the story; it is like body without soul. In this paper, the writer expresses to the readers about the characteristics of the main character in the Frances H. Burnett’s The Secret Garden. Mary Lennox is the main character; she is rebellious and a reciprocal girl. But when she is an orphan and live with her uncle, Mary change. The problems of this research are what factors that influence to the main character and how psychology factors see the main character. The Aims of this research are to know what factors that influences to Mary Lennox’s character aand to know how psychology factors see Mary Lennox’s character. In this research the writer uses qualitative method to explain this research. This research used Lawrence Kohlberg’s moral development theory. From the view of Lawrence Kohlberg’s moral development theory, the writer found some characteristics of Mary Lennox as the main character following: first, the pre-conventional level, on this level Mary was a rebellious and a reciprocal girl. Second, the conventional level, on this level Mary was a good girl. The writer also found, that Mary’s environment and the people surround her like Marthe, Dickon, and Colin that influence mainly in forming charecteristics of Mary Lennox.
