AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE THAT USED IN THREE POPULAR SONGS BY SLEEPING AT LAST

ABSTRACT Elvara Artamevya Raharjo Putri. An Analysis of Figurative Language that Used in Three Popular Songs by Sleeping at Last. An Undergraduate Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Letters and Cultures. Gunadarma University. Jakarta. 2022. This research analyzed figurative language in the three most popular songs by ‘Sleeping at Last’. The problems of this research are what types of figurative language are found in the three song lyrics by ‘Sleeping at Last’, what are the true meaning behind the lyrics that used figurative language in the three song lyrics by ‘Sleeping at Last’, and which type of figurative language is the most dominant in the three song lyrics by ‘Sleeping at Last’. The writer used song lyrics by ‘Sleeping at Last’ entitled Turning Page, Already Gone, and Saturn. The objective of this research are 1) to identify the types of figurative language that found in the three song lyrics by ‘Sleeping at Last’, 2) to analyze and describe the true meaning of the lyrics that used figurative language in the three song lyrics by ‘Sleeping at Last’, and 3) to find out which type of figurative language found dominant in the three song lyrics by ‘Sleeping at Last’. The writer used a qualitative method by utilizing Geoffrey N Leech’s theory (1969). The result of this research showed 33 data with 8 types of figurative language, they are: one synecdoche, nine metaphors, one simile, four symbolisms, eight hyperboles, two ironies, three paradoxes, and five personifications. ix + 38 + Lampiran
